Latest Cohort of Inclusive Internship Initiative Celebrated

A new cohort of Solomon Islanders has embarked on an internship program supported by the Australian Government. The program aims to develop job skills and gain work experience through placements with local businesses and organisations. A ceremony in Honiara on Thursday, July 18, 2024, welcomed 15 interns into the program. Facilitated by Pasifiki HR through Australia’s Strongim Bisnis initiative, the internships have been offered to people with disabilities, recent graduates from local universities including Solomon Islands National University, University of the South Pacific, the Australia Pacific Training Coalition, and prospective and returning workers of the Pacific Australia Labor Mobility scheme. Around 80 internships will be offered over 12 months, providing Solomon Islanders with invaluable work experience, skills development, and access to employment opportunities. Australia Gifts ICT Equipment to Solomon Islands Immigration

In a significant step towards bolstering border security, Australia has formally handed over advanced information, communications, and technology (ICT) equipment to the Solomon Islands Immigration Division (SIID).  This initiative aims to support the establishment of strong and secure borders in the region. The Australian Border Force (ABF) has gifted laptops, desktops, and other accessories that will be primarily utilized at the outposts in Munda and the new immigration office in Auki. Tulagi Market Redevelopment Opened

Tulagi’s main market officially reopened following Australian-funded refurbishments, revitalising the Central Province capital with a more functional, accessible and climate resilient market. The market refurbishment was officially handed over by the Minister of Infrastructure Development, Hon Manasseh Maelanga MP, the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Hon Franklyn Derek Wasi MP, and the Premier for Central Province, Hon Michael Salini, together with Australia’s High Commissioner, His Excellency Rod Hilton. Solomon Islanders to receive Australian-Standard Aged Care Training in Honiara

Australia is supporting skills development, training and jobs for Solomon Islanders. Australia is proud to be delivering a new qualification in Honiara: the Certificate III in Individual Support (ageing). Starting in July this year, the first cohort of students will begin this Australian-standard training in aged care, to graduate with the full qualifications required to work in the Australian aged care sector. Aged Care student with trainer, Jules Clifton Powell, first week of training. The 24 students, including 19 women, will undertake four months of classroom-based training in Honiara, followed by two months of practical training in Fiji. This training is being delivered through Australia’s leading investment in skills in Solomon Islands, the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC). Inaugural SIG ICT Services Junior Professional Program Cohort Celebrated

The inaugural cohort of the Solomon Island Government’s ICT Junior Professional Program (JPP) was celebrated on Friday 5 July at a ceremony marking both the end of their six-month placement and Solomon Islands Independence Day. The JPP was created by SIG with Australian funding in 2024 to provide a pathway for ICT graduates in Solomon Islands to enter the industry and acquire essential skills and experience to kickstart their career. The eagerly awaited Honiara Central Market extension opened today with a large undercover space and stalls for 100 vendors. The SBD10 million project was handed over late yesterday afternoon by Australian High Commissioner to Solomon Islands Mr Rod Hilton, to Honiara Deputy City Mayor Hon Clement Terewauri, who undertook a tour of the extension led by local builder Tropic Group Builders and local designer, Kramer Ausenco. Deputy Mayor Terewauri said the extension provided a much more comfortable and hygienic space for the nation’s largest market. “We acknowledge Australia for providing an improved experience for Honiara’s main marketplace, for the public and for vendors earning a vital income for their family. “Our market vendors will be grateful for this expansion to Central Market and they are looking forward to selling their produce undercover and off the ground,” he said.
