Fredrick Kusu Honored as Online Journalist of the Year by MASI

Fredrick Kusu, a young journalist from Guadalcanal Province, has been honored by the Media Association Solomon Islands (MASI) as the Online Journalist of the Year. His dedication to modern journalism and innovative work with the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation (SIBC) has made him a standout figure in the media landscape.

The MASI Media Awards 2024 celebrated the resilience and dedication of Solomon Islands media professionals, acknowledging their achievements despite challenges such as limited resources, financial constraints, and political pressure.

Among the awardees was Fredrick Kusu, whose digital media work has set new journalism standards as an editor with the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation (SIBC).

Fredrick was among the 11 journalists in the Solomon Islands honored at the MASI Media Awards 2024, held on July 20 at Heritage Park Hotel under the theme "Celebrating the Strength and Spirit of Solomon Islands Media."

This prestigious award recognizes his significant contributions to journalism, particularly his innovative work as an editor for SIBC on radio, TV, and online platforms.

At SIBC, Fredrick ensures content is distributed fairly, balanced, and accurately across multiple platforms. His recent editorial work during the 17th Pacific Games and the Joint Election 2024 has been instrumental in delivering accurate and timely information to the public.

His ability to manage content across various media formats highlights his versatility and proficiency in the rapidly evolving media landscape.

Reflecting on his journey, Fredrick expressed his gratitude for the MASI award, saying, “The MASI award makes me feel that my work has been recognized and encourages me to continue with what I am doing. The recognition given to me by MASI underscores my work's impact and will motivate me in this industry.”

His advice to aspiring journalists is to persevere and remain passionate about informing the public, emphasizing the media's role as the fourth estate.

“My advice for young people is to keep working hard on their passion for informing our citizens and fulfilling the role of the media as the fourth estate. It is about our love for the job that matters.”

In today's media landscape, transitioning from traditional to online platforms has become crucial. This shift is not just about keeping up with technological advancements but also about meeting audiences' changing consumption habits. Online platforms offer real-time updates, interactive features, and a broader reach, making news more accessible and engaging.

As editor, Fredrick ensures consistent updates on SIBC’s website, Facebook Page, and TV channels to maintain relevance and engagement with audiences across the Solomon Islands and abroad.

Fredrick began his career with SIBC in 2014 as a junior reporter. Recognizing the need for advanced skills and knowledge, he furthered his education, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Law from the University of the South Pacific (USP) in 2021.

His academic pursuits were driven by a desire to enhance his capabilities and contribute more effectively to the media industry in the Solomon Islands.

Fredrick also represents Solomon Islands journalists at the COP28 session in Dubai. This prestigious event provides him with a platform to share critical environmental issues and insights, highlighting the importance of global cooperation in tackling climate change.

While attending the COP28 session, he faced the challenge of covering the 17th Pacific Games in Honiara. Despite the distance, he leveraged the power of the internet, coordinating with his newsroom team to ensure the audience was kept updated about the games.

This experience underscores the pivotal role of online media in informing and mobilizing public opinion on local and international matters.

Fredrick Kusu's achievements showcase the innovative impact of modern journalism in the Solomon Islands. His ongoing leadership in digital media with SIBC inspires the Solomon Islands’ communities and the importance of online media.
