Chinese Embassy Donates Smartphones to Provincial Youth Councils

Image
Ten youth leaders from provincial youth councils across the Solomon Islands have received smartphones from the Chinese Embassy to improve communication and coordination among youth leaders nationwide. The support followed a request from the Solomon Islands National Youth Congress (SINYC) to assist provincial youth councils facing communication challenges due to geographic isolation across the country. The smartphones were presented to provincial youth council representatives attending the SINYC Annual General Meeting in Honiara. SINYC General Secretary, Josie Anne Ashley, said the support is an important step toward strengthening communication and networking among youth leaders throughout the islands. SINYC General Scretary Josie Anne Ashley received donation for smartphones from Chinese Embassy to support communication challenges of Provincial Youth Council. “For us, it’s a step toward better networking. Simple things like this support keep us staying connected with our Provinci...

MCT & YECSI Transform Gizo’s Juice Man Business

Image
At the centre of Gizo market, where people from surrounding islands gather to trade, shop, and connect, a young entrepreneur is building a name for himself—serving fresh, local juice to both locals and international visitors. Jamaica Tanito, widely known as the “Juice Man,” is turning a simple business idea into a growing enterprise, thanks to his determination and recent support from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (MCT) and the Youth Entrepreneurship Council Solomon Islands (YECSI). Jamaica’s journey into business began in 2023 when he attended a boot camp training at Orawae Cottage in Gizo. It was there that he first learned about YECSI and connected with other young entrepreneurs who shared similar ambitions. “I wanted to join YECSI because I have a passion for business,” he said. “I saw other young entrepreneurs and wanted to build networks from the province to Honiara and also benefit from the training opportunities.” After completing Form Five, Jamaica faced challeng...

Free: Reconciliation Week Art Exhibition

Image
A special exhibition opening this week in Honiara will offer young people across the Solomon Islands an opportunity to experience Australia’s culture, history, and storytelling through art. The Yuendumu Doors art exhibition, one of Australia’s most significant Indigenous cultural collections, will be on display from 27 May to 3 June 2026 at the Solomon Islands National Art Gallery. Ms Julie Fakaia, Curator of the National Art Gallery, with the Yuendumu Doors exhibition.  Free to the public, the exhibition features poster prints of artworks originally painted more than 30 years ago by Warlpiri elders at the Yuendumu community school in Central Australia. These paintings marked the Warlpiri people’s first use of acrylic paint, combining traditional storytelling with a modern artistic medium. Each artwork tells a powerful story, depicting daily life, cultural knowledge, and the Dreaming, the Aboriginal belief system that explains creation, connection to land, and the laws that g...

Island Hopping Through the Western Solomon Islands

Image
Early on a Monday morning, I boarded a domestic flight out of Honiara, bound for the Western Province of the Solomon Islands. Officially, I was travelling with a team from the Solomon Islands Tertiary Education Skills Authority (SITESA) and Pacific Australia Skills. But this was more than a work trip. Crossing the Babata passage. It was the beginning of an island-hopping journey—one that would carry me across lagoons, into communities, and through stories that are deeply connected by sea, culture, and history. From above, the lagoons of Marovo, Roviana, and Vonavona stretched endlessly beneath us, scattered with islands that felt both distant and linked at the same time. Looking down, it was clear—this was not a single destination, but a chain of experiences waiting to unfold. Our first landing was Seghe, where the journey gently slowed. As the plane descended over the calm, mirror-like waters of Marovo Lagoon, the noise of the outside world seemed to fade. Seghe doesn’t rush...

Dr Aqorau Urges Mindset Shift on TVET Among Solomon Islands Youth

Image
Dr Transform Aqorau, Vice Chancellor of Solomon Islands National University, has urged young people in Solomon Islands to rethink their perceptions of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), describing it as a critical pathway to employment, self-reliance, and national development. Speaking to hundreds of students at Tabaka Technical Institute in the western province, Dr Aqorau delivered a message centred on skills, opportunity, and the future of the country’s workforce. “Success is not defined by where you come from, but by the skills you develop and how you use them,” he said. Returning to his home region of Roviana, Dr Aqorau said his visit was both personal and purposeful, connecting with students while representing the board of the Solomon Islands Tertiary Education and Skills Authority (SITESA), accompanied by staff from SITESA and Pacific Australia Skills. He said such visits are important to ensure national leaders better understand how rural training ce...

Solomon Islands Calls for Ocean Governance Rooted in Action and Authority at Melanesian Ocean Summit

Image
In a room filled with regional leaders, ocean advocates, and policymakers, the voice of Solomon Islands carried a message grounded not in ambition alone, but in action. Taking the floor at the inaugural Melanesian Ocean Summit in Port Moresby, Solomon Islands delivered a plenary statement that did more than outline a position, it told a story of a nation already deep in the work of protecting its ocean. At the heart of that story is the Melanesian Ocean Reserve (MOR), not as a future aspiration, but as a living, operational framework shaped by customary law, Indigenous stewardship, and national decision-making. Leaders and partners at the inaugural Melanesian Ocean Summit in Port Moresby For Solomon Islands, ocean governance is not something to be declared, it is something to be done. The country used the Summit platform to make this distinction clear. While regional cooperation remains important, it must follow a careful and deliberate path, one that respects national processes ...
