Seghe Airfield Upgrade Expect to Boost Solomon Islands’ Tourism Prospects

The upgrade of Seghe Airfield is not just a win for aviation but a significant boost for the tourism industry in the Solomon Islands. With the runway now capable of handling flights under all weather conditions, the region can expect a surge in tourist arrivals, particularly to the picturesque Western Province.

Known as the largest saltwater lagoon in the world, with vibrant coral reefs and rich cultural heritage, the Western Province is a growing tourist destination. The improved airfield infrastructure will facilitate easier access for international tourists, enhancing the appeal of the Solomon Islands as a travel destination. Tour operators and local businesses are poised to benefit from the increased footfall, creating economic opportunities across the province.

Local job creation is another direct benefit of the airfield upgrade. The construction phase provided employment opportunities for the local workforce, and the anticipated growth in tourism will further stimulate job creation in hospitality, transport, and various service sectors. This development is expected to uplift the local economy, providing a stable source of income for many families in the region.

Moreover, the enhanced connectivity will support better access to essential services, contributing to the overall quality of life for the residents of the western province of the Solomon Islands. Improved transportation links mean easier access to healthcare, education, and other critical services, fostering a more equitable development across the regions.

Recently, the Australian and New Zealand Governments officially handed over the upgraded Seghe Airfield runway to the people of the Solomon Islands. Dignitaries from New Zealand, Australia, and the Solomon Islands marked this milestone, highlighting a robust commitment to aviation and economic development in the region.

The Seghe Airfield upgrade is part of a broader initiative by Australia and New Zealand to support high-quality airfield upgrades across the Solomon Islands. This strategic effort aims to unlock the region's full economic potential and position it as a key player in the Pacific tourism landscape.

During the handover ceremony, New Zealand’s Deputy Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Winston Peters, highlighted the transformative impact of the $55 million project.

“The upgrade of the Seghe Airfield runway in Western Province will enable flights to operate under all weather conditions, making operations safer and more reliable and enhancing connectivity for Solomon Islands’ provinces. This improved connectivity is anticipated to be pivotal in the region's economic resilience and equitable development.

The project, co-funded by the Governments of New Zealand, Australia, and the Solomon Islands and implemented by Downer and AECOM, is set to bring extensive benefits to the local community.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasized the alignment of this project with the Solomon Islands Government’s priorities.

“Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manele has made it clear economic growth, job creation, and infrastructure development were his Government’s number one priority. Australia and New Zealand have listened and are responding, working with the Solomon Islands Government to upgrade Seghe Airfield to bring greater economic benefits, including tourism, to Western Province,” Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said

With the upgraded Seghe Airfield operational, the Solomon Islands is set to welcome a new era of tourism and economic growth. This will bring lasting benefits to its people and position the nation as a hidden gem destination in the Pacific.
