Ngossi Ward 1 Youths Build Money Skills Through ANZ Training
Twenty young people from communities across Ngossi Ward 1 are participating in a two-day financial literacy training aimed at strengthening their money management skills and supporting better financial decision-making.
The participants, comprising five females and 15 males, are attending the ANZ Money Mind training, supported by the Honiara City Council (HCC) Youth Division and the TMC Foundation.
Held at the Councillor’s leaf hut in the Whiteriver community, the training coincides with the commemoration of International Youth Day and highlights the ward’s commitment to youth development.
Youth representatives from Ngossi Valley, Ngossi Ridge, Tingge, Agape, 7Up, Independence Valley, Stream Valley, Laundry Valley, Tashae A and B, Whiteriver Central, Upper Central and Namoruka are taking part in the programme.
Speaking at the opening, Ward Councillor Cr Rex Konofilia encouraged participants to make the most of the opportunity, noting that the training provides important knowledge to support their personal goals, families and communities.
Participants have also expressed appreciation for the opportunity to gain financial knowledge.
“This is an important training for us, especially for me. Any topic about money is important, and having knowledge around it is very valuable,” said participant Justina Olifaedili.
She also thanked the ward councillor and partner organisations for making the programme possible.
Another participant, Cynthia Surimae, said the training was her first experience with the ANZ Money Mind programme.
“This is my first time attending this training, and it is new knowledge for me. What I have learned will add value to my understanding, and I will be able to share it with other youths in Upper Central Whiteriver,” she said.
She acknowledged Cr Rex Konofilia, ANZ, and the HCC Youth Division, adding that she hopes more young people will have access to similar training opportunities.
Speaking on behalf of the TMC Foundation, Mose Jnr Aunama said the training addresses a long-standing gap in access to financial literacy programmes for youths in the ward.
“This is an important training for our young people in Ngossi Ward. Access to programmes like this has been a challenge for communities on our side of town for a long time,” he said.
He expressed gratitude to Councillor Konofilia for recognising the value of investing in young people, particularly during International Youth Day.
“These are the types of trainings we would like to see more regularly. While we may not have them every month yet, this is a strong starting point,” he added.
Mr Aunama also acknowledged the HCC Youth Division for its support, ANZ for facilitating the training, and youth leaders for mobilising participants.
“Our young people can truly benefit when stakeholders come together, and that is exactly what has happened today,” he said.
Participants are expected to receive certificates upon completion of the programme, marking a step forward in strengthening financial awareness and youth engagement in Ngossi Ward 1.
