Young Female Entrepreneur Loses Tourism Investment in MV Anjeannette Fire

A young female entrepreneur from Rennell Province is facing a major setback after losing a significant business investment in a recent ship fire in Honiara.

Vicky Tipaika, co-owner of Tahamoana Lodge located at Lake Tegano in the eastern part of Rennell, had been working tirelessly with her family to build and grow their small tourism business.

The lodge, known for its peaceful natural setting, offers accommodation to visitors seeking an authentic island experience.

Earlier this year, Vicky’s business received a major boost through support from the Young Entrepreneurs Council Solomon Islands (YECSI), facilitated by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (MCT).

The support came in the form of a solar power system intended to improve services at the lodge and enhance comfort for guests.

However, those plans were abruptly halted when the vessel MV Anjeannette, which was transporting the equipment, caught fire in Honiara. The incident resulted in the complete loss of the solar system and other essential materials.

Among the items destroyed were six solar panels, inverters, batteries, and various electrical appliance equipment that represented not only financial investment but also a vision for the future of the business.

“This is a big loss to us,” Vicky said. “We looked forward to this investment because it would upgrade our accommodation services. It was meant to make our guests more comfortable and help us grow.”

She added that the loss has disrupted their plans and placed uncertainty over the lodge’s development.

“It is not something we expected to happen, but it has affected our plans moving forward,” she said. “I hope that whatever we lost, the government or other businesses in the country can find a way to help us.”

Despite the setback, Vicky expressed gratitude to YECSI and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism for their support.

“This business was built through the struggles of our family, and YECSI, through MCT, were the first to support us. We are truly thankful, even though this tragedy has taken away what was provided,” she said.

The incident highlights the challenges faced by small and young emerging entrepreneurs in Solomon Islands, particularly those in remote areas who rely heavily on transport and external support to grow their businesses.
