NGOSSI Ward 1 Unites for 48th Independence Day March Parade

Ngossi Ward 1 in West Honiara will celebrate Solomon Islands’ Independence Day on 7th July with its 2nd Annual Independence Day March and Community Celebration, bringing together communities from across the ward in a vibrant display of unity, culture, and national pride.

What started as a small patriotic initiative in 2025 has grown into a powerful symbol of unity for one of Honiara’s most diverse communities.

This year’s event marks the 48th Independence Anniversary of Solomon Islands, commemorating the country’s independence from British colonial rule on 7th July 1978.

Driven by the TMC Foundation and supported by Ward Councillor for Ngossi Ward 1, Hon. Rex Konofilia, the initiative continues to gain momentum—bringing together people from across the ward in a shared celebration of identity, heritage, and national pride.

A Ward Rich in Diversity and History

Ngossi Ward 1, the first of Honiara’s 12 wards, stretches from the busy area of Rove Bulkshop to White River. It is home to a wide mix of communities, cultures, and backgrounds—making it one of the most vibrant and diverse wards in the capital.

This diversity, community leaders say, is not a challenge but a strength.

Ward Councillor Hon. Rex Konofilia emphasised the importance of unity within this diversity, encouraging residents to embrace what makes the ward unique.

“Embrace its diversity as the strength that it is known for and continue to be a united ward, with unity as its foundation,” he said.

From Local Initiative to Growing Movement

What began as a simple effort to promote patriotism at the community level has evolved into a meaningful partnership involving local leadership, community groups, and law enforcement.

This year marks the addition of a new partner—the White River Police—joining the Ngossi Ward 1 Administration and community stakeholders to deliver a larger and more inclusive event.

While the celebration is centred on Ngossi Ward 1, organisers say the event is primarily for ward residents, while also welcoming invited guests and visitors from outside the ward to join in the spirit of unity.

The Parade: A Symbol of Unity

At the heart of the celebration is the community parade—widely regarded as the highlight of the event.

The march will begin from Raffle Range and move through to White River Field, led by the White River Police. Along the route, community leaders, elders, churches, schools, youth groups, women’s groups, businesses, and families will walk side by side.

More than just a procession, the parade represents a powerful message: that people from different cultures and backgrounds can come together with one purpose—to celebrate their nation.

A Day of Celebration and Connection

Following the parade, the White River Field will host a vibrant community celebration featuring keynote speeches, cultural performances, and health-focused activities.

Community members will have access to free health checks provided by the White River Seventh-day Adventist Health Team, while the Honiara City Council Health Division will raise awareness on malaria prevention.

Entertainment will reflect the rich cultural diversity of the ward, with performances by Kaloka Youth from Isabel Province, Tafivaka from Tikopia, and Micronesian groups showcasing traditional Tamure dance.

Organisers say the event is designed not only to celebrate Independence Day but also to strengthen relationships across communities—bringing together churches, organisations, and families in a spirit of fellowship.

Building a Stronger Future Together

Moses Jnr Aunama, one of the organisers and a community leader, said the march is more than just an annual event—it is part of a long-term vision.

He said they hope the celebration will continue to grow each year, eventually becoming a major community festival that draws participation from across Honiara and beyond.

At its core, the event carries a simple yet powerful message: that unity, responsibility, and shared identity are key to building stronger communities.

As the nation marks Independence Day on 7th July, Ngossi Ward 1 is setting an example—showing how communities can come together not only to celebrate their past, but to shape a better future.

With the theme, “Community Unity and Responsibility for a Greater Tomorrow,” the message is clear:
