YECSI and Members Raise Over SBD7,000 for Simbo Families

What began as a regular Sunday market at King Solomon Hotel became something far more meaningful, a day of compassion, unity, and hope for families in Simbo affected by Cyclone Maila.

Members of the Young Entrepreneur Council Solomon Islands (YECSI), alongside supporters from western province and the public, raised more than SBD7,500 to assist communities in Simbo, Western Province, who are still recovering from the devastating impacts of the cyclone.

The fundraising drive, known as “YECSI for Simbo,” was held during the monthly YECSI Sunday Market at Troppo, where young entrepreneurs usually gather to showcase and sell their products.

But this month, alongside the handmade crafts and small business displays, a donation box stood as a symbol of solidarity.

As shoppers browsed through local products and connected with young business owners, many also stopped to contribute cash donations and clothing for families back home.

A handful of individuals, families, and local entrepreneurs turned up to support the cause, showing that distance does not weaken community ties.

YECSI Coordinator, Moses Jnr Aunama, said the initiative reflected the true spirit of young entrepreneurs, not only building businesses, but also giving back to communities in times of need.

He said the YECSI monthly market is designed to provide members with opportunities to showcase their products and connect with the public, but this month’s market carried a deeper purpose.

“This was more than just a market day. It was about standing together for our people in Simbo who have been affected by Cyclone Maila. Our members wanted to use this platform not only for business, but to make a real difference,” he said.

Aunama acknowledged the generosity shown by YECSI members and members of the public who came forward to donate.

He also thanked King Solomon Hotel for continuing to support the Sunday Market initiative, which made the donation drive possible.

During the handover ceremony, YECSI Board Member Creina Desonia Tapalaboe formally presented the donations to Talie Hong of TJH Consultancy, a YECSI member and committee representative for the Simbo Honiara community.

Receiving the support on behalf of Simbo, Ms Hong said the gesture meant a lot to families affected by the cyclone.

She acknowledged YECSI for taking the initiative and said all contributions would be directed toward helping families rebuild their lives back home.

“This support is deeply appreciated. It shows that even from Honiara, our people and fellow Solomon Islanders have not forgotten Simbo,” she said. “Every donation, whether cash, clothing, or simply showing up to support, will help families as they recover and rebuild.”

For many who attended, the day was a reminder that entrepreneurship is not only about profit, but also about purpose.

As Cyclone Maila left many families facing uncertainty, YECSI’s young entrepreneurs chose to respond with action, proving that when communities come together, even small acts of kindness can create lasting impact.
