Coordinated National Events Plan Gains Momentum in Honiara
Efforts to strengthen collaboration and coordination across the Solomon Islands’ growing calendar of cultural, music and sporting events are gathering pace following a high-level meeting between the Ministry of Culture & Tourism (MCT), Tourism Solomons and national event organisers.
Chaired by MCT Director of Tourism, Greg Auta’a, the meeting was held at the national tourist office in Honiara and focused on developing a more coordinated approach to planning and promoting major events across the country.

Discussions centred on how MCT and Tourism Solomons can better support organisers through improved coordination, earlier engagement in the planning process and strengthened marketing efforts.
Participants also explored practical measures to help event organisers and provincial tourism authorities better align their timelines to maximise impact and visitor engagement.
A key outcome of the meeting was a shared commitment to develop a practical national events blueprint.
The proposed framework is intended to guide future planning, foster stronger collaboration and underpin a unified marketing strategy aimed at boosting domestic participation and international visitation.
Among those in attendance were Cedrick William and Noel Nelu representing the Tinakula Festival; Zaccheus Sepo and Bernard Kemakeza from the Central Islands Province Tourism Association and organisers of the proposed Megapode Festival; and Guadalcanal Tourism Officer Jacinta Koli Vagha, who is working towards establishing a Hotomai cultural event.
Also present were Adrian Tuhanuku and Erick Chow representing the Oceania Rugby 7s and associated entertainment activities, Lynette Adomea representing the annual Bonfire Festival, and Walter Leo representing the Aela Riddim Music Festival.
The initiative reflects a growing recognition of the important role national events play in showcasing the Solomon Islands’ cultural identity, supporting local communities and driving tourism growth.
With stronger coordination and a consolidated annual events calendar in view, stakeholders are optimistic that the country’s festivals and sporting events can achieve greater visibility and long-term sustainability.
