Leading with Heart: Raywin Aluta’s Transformative Journey to Empower Solomon Islands Youth
True leadership begins beyond the comfort zone.
For Raywin Aluta, Coordinator of the Honiara City Council (HCC) Youth Programs – Tokspot Project, stepping onto the global stage has translated into renewed purpose and practical tools to strengthen youth mental health in the Solomon Islands.
Recently highlighted by the U.S. Embassy Honiara, Raywin’s journey from the streets of Honiara to the suburbs of New Jersey demonstrates how international exchange can drive local impact.

Through the prestigious Community Solutions Program (CSP), a U.S. Department of State-sponsored initiative, she spent three months gaining hands-on experience in youth mental health and community development.
Global Exposure, Local Mission
Raywin was placed with the Northern New Jersey Partnership for Maternal and Child Health and the Central Jersey Family Health Consortium—two leading non-profit organisations in youth advocacy and mental health support.
Working alongside the Teen Health team, she engaged directly with community programs, learning how structured systems respond to complex youth challenges.
Tools that Empower Youth
During her fellowship, Raywin became a certified trainer in evidence-based programs including the Teen Outreach Program (TOP), Teen Speak, and Flash Talk.
· Teen Outreach Program (TOP): A curriculum that promotes healthy behaviours, leadership, and community service.
· Teen Speak and Flash Talk: Strategic communication tools that support open, honest conversations between adults and young people about difficult life choices.
These tools promote healthy decision-making, leadership, and open conversations around life choices.
“This experience strengthened my confidence, expanded my professional skills, and reinforced my commitment to promoting mental health and wellbeing,” Raywin said.
Bringing It Home
Back in Honiara, Raywin plans to integrate these skills into the HCC Tokspot Project, with a focus on mental health and resilience training for young women.
By adapting proven models to the Solomon Islands context, she aims to create lasting, community-driven impact.
