Launch Pad Success: Deffe Turns Tourism Studies into a Sustainable Reality
While many young people wait for opportunities to come to them, Deffe Bennie, a young entrepreneur from Choiseul Province, chose to create his own, transforming his passion for tourism into an eco-tourism venture that will put Choiseul on the map.
His journey received a major boost on 27 January 2026, when he officially received $40,000 in funding support from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism through the Launch Pad initiative, implemented by Young Entrepreneurs Council Solomon Islands (YECSI) and Solomon Islands National University (SINU), designed to help young tourism entrepreneurs turn their ideas into reality.
Originally from Choiseul, Deffe travelled far from home to pursue his studies at the National University of Solomon Islands (SINU) under the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management.
Today, he is turning academic knowledge into practical action by establishing an eco-tourism lodge on Supizae Island, just outside Taro, the provincial capital.
He named the business Aelan lodge, and it is currently in the start-up and construction phase. It will be focusing on providing nature-based tourism experiences while offering simple, sustainable accommodation.
Deffe envisions a business that not only attracts visitors but also protects the environment.
"This business focuses on eco-tourism accommodation and activities," Deffe explained. "It reflects my passion for tourism and my commitment to caring for the environment, rather than harming it."
For Deffe, the decision to pursue entrepreneurship came from a mix of passion, purpose, and practicality.
Tourism offers a sustainable avenue for economic growth, creating jobs, generating income, and attracting foreign revenue, benefits meaningful for young people seeking opportunities in the Solomon Islands.
Despite his determination, the journey has not been without challenges. Logistics and transportation remain difficult, as Choiseul is remote and infrastructure is still developing.
Additionally, as a young entrepreneur, Deffe faces criticism and competition from established businesses.
"I stay motivated and committed to developing this project and contributing positively to the tourism industry," he said.
The $40,000 funding received through the Launch Pad initiative, delivered in partnership with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Young Entrepreneurs Council Solomon Islands (YECSI), and SINU, has provided both financial support and encouragement.
"This support is a major boost for my business," Deffe said. "Being one of the recipients is an honour, and I am grateful to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, YECSI, and SINU for believing in me. I hope this initiative inspires other young Solomon Islanders to venture into tourism and develop sustainable businesses."
Deffe also offered advice to aspiring young entrepreneurs: "Be prepared to face challenges, obstacles, and setbacks, but don’t let them stop you. With hard work, patience, and perseverance, your efforts will eventually flourish."
