Rod Hilton, Australia’s High Commissioner Bids Farewell to Solomon Islands

After years of service marked by partnership, trust, and enduring friendship, Australia’s High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, His Excellency Rod Hilton, is departing the country—leaving behind what he describes as “one of the greatest honours” of his life.

The High Commissioner and his wife Ewa Janus open the Oneone Abu Health Centre, Malaita Province, co-funded by Australia and Hon Mathew Wale.

In a heartfelt farewell message, Mr. Hilton reflected on the deep connections he and his wife, Ewa, have formed with the people and communities of Solomon Islands during his tenure.

“As I prepare to leave Solomon Islands, I want to express my deepest gratitude to the people of this beautiful country. Serving as Australia’s High Commissioner has been one of the greatest honours of my life,” he said.

From the vibrant streets of Honiara to the most remote villages, I’ve experienced the warmth, generosity, and resilience that make Solomon Islands so special. These years have been more than a job—they’ve been a journey of friendship, learning, and shared purpose.

Together, we’ve strengthened health and education systems, supported economic growth, expanded infrastructure, created local jobs, worked on community projects in every province and constituency, and deepened security cooperation.

We’ve stood side by side in times of challenge and celebrated successes—from the Pacific Games, national elections and Pacific Islands Forum. But beyond projects and programs, what matters most are the relationships, trust, and respect we’ve built. That is the foundation for everything that comes next.

To the Government, community leaders, partners, and friends—thank you for welcoming me, guiding me, and working with me.

To my incredible team at the High Commission, I am proud of all we’ve achieved together. And to the people of Solomon Islands: mi talem bigfala tagio for welkamim mi, for teachim mi, an for waka tugeda long disfala rod.

Australia is privileged and honoured to be the numbawan partner, numbawan friend and numbawan family for Solomon Islands.

Australia will always be here for Solomon Islands; we are a partner you can rely on.

As my wife Ewa and I return to Australia, we carry with us countless memories and a deep love for this country.
