Australia Boosts Skills and Jobs in Malaita with Scholarships and Safety Gear

Australia has reaffirmed its commitment to skills development and job creation in the Solomon Islands with the awarding of 78 Australia Skills Awards scholarships and the handover of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to students at the Malaita Provincial Technical Institute (MPTI) in Fiu, Central Kwara’ae.

During his visit, Australian High Commissioner Rod Hilton joined government ministers, students, trainers, and community leaders to celebrate the milestone and to highlight Australia’s partnership in expanding access to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in rural communities.

High Commissioner Hilton said vocational education has the power to transform lives. “Skills are the backbone of economic development, and Australia is proud to stand alongside the Solomon Islands Government in our shared commitment to expanding access to quality technical and vocational education and training. Together, we are working to ensure that Solomon Islanders have every opportunity to gain work-ready skills and qualifications—so they can secure meaningful employment.”

Support for Future Tradespeople

The PPE handover equips students in Automotive Engineering and Building Construction programs with essential safety gear such as work boots, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and uniforms. This ensures that students can train safely while maintaining professional industry standards.

The 78 Malaita-based scholarship recipients are part of 632 students nationwide benefiting from the 2025 Australia Skills Awards across ten Rural Training Centres (RTCs).

Australia’s support to MPTI goes beyond scholarships. Investments include a vehicle hoist, student laptops, an automotive barn for hands-on learning, and professional development opportunities for trainers—providing students with the tools and environment they need to thrive.

Community Leaders Join the Celebration

The event featured traditional garlanding and cultural performances led by MPTI students, reflecting the strong community pride in the institute’s achievements.

Among the dignitaries present were:

·         Hon. Ricky Fuo’o, Minister for Infrastructure and Development

·         Hon. Rexon Ramofafia, Minister of National Planning and Development Coordination

·         Hon. Daniel Suilea Waneoroa, Minister of Rural Development

·         Hon. Matthew Wale, Leader of the Opposition

·         Hon. John Maneniaru, Member for West Are’are

·         Hon. Claudius Tei’ifi, Member for West Kwaio

Attendees toured the facilities and observed live demonstrations from students, showcasing practical skills that are preparing them for real-world employment opportunities.

Investing in Skills, Building Futures

Australia’s ongoing partnership with the Solomon Islands Government aims to strengthen the TVET sector and create more pathways to employment for young people across the country.

This investment ensures that every student—especially those in rural and remote communities—has the opportunity to build a brighter future for themselves, their families, and their communities.
