High Commissioner Hilton said, “the Roadshow demonstrates Australia’s commitment to helping Solomon Islanders achieve their education and career goals while strengthening links between universities, communities, and future leaders”.
“Australia has long partnered with Solomon Islands in education. This Roadshow supports young Solomon Islanders in accessing high-quality education, building new skills that make them ready for today’s job market, and returning home to help drive the country’s development,” Mr. Hilton said.
The initiative directly aligns with Solomon Islands’ education and human resource development priorities by expanding access to recognised qualifications and practical training.
Through Australia Awards more than 600 Solomon Islanders have studied in Australia and the region. When awardees return home, they contribute to the development of Solomon Islands through enhancing education and research, driving economic and social development and fostering international partnerships.
Each year, Australia Awards support up to 50 Solomon Islanders to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Australia, while another 50 participate in targeted short courses designed with local institutions.
Minister for Education and Human Resources Development, Honourable Tozen Leokana, said the government aims to build a skilled and capable workforce, and the Roadshow complements this goal.
“The Australian Education Roadshow helps our people connect with trusted universities and gain valuable knowledge and skills. These opportunities empower our people to contribute meaningfully to our communities and our nation’s future. We thank Australia for its continued support,” Minister Leokana said.
The partnership also benefits Australia. Through the New Colombo Plan, Australian students study in Solomon Islands, building relationships and shared understanding.
Solomon Islands Australia Alumni Association Vice Chairperson Jean Uwesi highlighted how alumni connections demonstrate the long-term value of the partnership.
“Studying in Australia changes lives. The friendships and networks we build help us become better leaders. The Roadshow inspires our next generation and reminds us, the importance of staying connected,” Ms. Uwesi said.
Mr. Hilton thanked Austrade, Australia Awards, local education partners, and all universities for working together to create opportunities for Solomon Islanders.
