Australia Supports Inclusive Skills Training at San Isidro Christian Care Centre

San Isidro Christian Care Centre students will now have access to brand-new, industry-standard tools and equipment thanks to Australia’s ongoing support for the Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector in Solomon Islands.

The Australian Government, through its partnership with the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD) and the Australia Skills Awards, has provided a range of modern power tools — including circular saws, sanding machines, and a power planer — along with safety equipment, a colour printer, and accessories to enhance training delivery and operations at the centre.

Minister for Education, Hon Tozen Leokana, handing over the power tools for training to Sister Maria, Principal of San Isidro Christian Care Centre.

The handover event was attended by the Minister of Education and Human Resources Development, Honourable Tozen Leokana, and the Australian Deputy High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, Andrew Schloeffel, who met with students and staff to see firsthand the benefits the equipment will bring.

Minister Leokana reaffirmed his ministry’s commitment to strengthening the skills sector and developing Rural Training Centres to support career pathways for young Solomon Islanders.

“The resources handed over to San Isidro will help raise the standard of training, prepare students work-ready skills, and show the value of investing in vocational education. We want to ensure that our people living with a disability gain skills that empower them to contribute to their communities just like any other Solomon Islander”, said Hon. Leokana.

Australia’s High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, Rod Hilton, said the initiative reflects Australia’s commitment to inclusive skills development.

“Our shared efforts are part of Australia’s commitment to inclusive skills delivery in Solomon Islands. Strengthening local training systems to build and harness skills in the tertiary vocational education and training sector are crucial to Solomon Islands’ economic development.”

As part of the partnership, 20 students at San Isidro have been awarded Australia Skills Award scholarships to study at the centre in 2025, ensuring they have the resources and opportunities to gain practical, in-demand skills.

The initiative is a significant step toward ensuring all students — including those with disabilities — can train in a safe, inclusive environment with the tools they need to succeed in the workforce or start their own businesses.
