Australia Supports King George VI School with New Cafeteria

Students at King George VI National Secondary School now have access to a brand-new cafeteria, officially opened on February 28 by Australian High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, His Excellency Rod Hilton.

The cafeteria, built with materials sourced from local businesses, was jointly funded by Australia and the King George VI Alumni Association of 1983-1988 under Australia’s Community Partnerships program.

The initiative is part of Australia’s ongoing commitment to improving school facilities and supporting education in the Solomon Islands.

High Commissioner Hilton said “Australia is excited to continue supporting King George VI School and all the students here, firstly through the renovated dormitories as part of Australia’s support to the 2023 Pacific Games, and now with this cafeteria.”

“We want to make sure that every one of you has the chance to reach your dreams, whether that’s becoming a doctor, a teacher, an artist, a scientist, or anything else you set your mind to.”

The new cafeteria is one of 100 community projects funded by Australia in 2024, injecting more than SBD 23 million into local businesses through the Community Partnerships program.

With this latest development, students at King George VI School now have an improved space for meals and social gatherings, further enhancing their educational experience.

The Australian High Commission is accepting applications for the Solomon Islands – Australia Community Partnerships until 23 March. For more information, please visit: https://solomonislands.embassy.gov.au/honi/communitypartnerships.html
