Australia Provides Solar-Powered Streetlights to State Ridge Community

Australia has provided ten new solar-powered streetlights to the State Ridge Community in Central Honiara Constituency.

Minister Counsellor Ms Lindsay Buckingham officially handed over the project on 6 March through the Community Partnerships program. Community members and Constituency Development Officer for Central Honiara, Mr Rexford Paul, warmly welcomed the Australian High Commission delegation.

The initiative reflects Australia’s commitment to supporting community-driven development projects in the Solomon Islands.

Australian High Commissioner Rod Hilton said this project was a shining example of the strong commitment and partnership between the Solomon Islands and Australia.

“This project was not just about lighting up the street, but about how Australia supports needs identified by communities to improve their livelihoods,” he said.

“The installation of solar-powered streetlights is a small but important part of a broader vision to create thriving communities.”

Project Coordinator Mr Julian Houkura said the community did not have any lights on the road for many years.

“Today, we are happy to have these streetlights – especially for the safety of women, youths and children. This will make it easier for our community to go about our daily activities without fear,” Mr Houkura said.

Australia funded over 100 community projects in 2024 under the Community Partnerships program, investing more than SBD 23 million in direct funding to local businesses.

Thirteen young entrepreneurs from the Young Entrepreneurs Council Solomon Islands (YECSI) have strengthened their business and customer service skills after completing a Collaborative Customer Care course with the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC).
