The construction of the new Buala Market in Isabel Province will boost the local economy and create over 50 jobs.

The project, led by Tropic Group Builders, is part of Australia’s investment in economic infrastructure through local businesses and suppliers.

To date, the project has generated over 92,000 hours of paid work for 55 Solomon Islanders, including 15 from Isabel Province.

The large 3-meter seawall is almost complete, making the market more resilient to cyclones and high sea levels.

Australia’s High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, His Excellency Rod Hilton, highlighted the importance of these jobs for family incomes and workforce skills development.

“At every Australian-supported worksite, from markets to airfields to health centres, Solomon Islanders are learning new and improved construction techniques to increase the quality and resilience of the infrastructure they’re building and look after health and safety on site.”

“While workers get ready to start on the Buala Market roof, Australia is making sure that workers are upskilled and stay safe.”

Construction of the Buala Market, which will increase vendor capacity to 150, is progressing well.  The new facility will include a seawall, a boat landing area, and accessible restrooms for people with disabilities.

This market is part of Australia’s provincial markets redevelopment program, which is being completed entirely by a Solomon Islander workforce.  Other markets are currently under construction or completed in Tulagi, Malu’u, and Honiara, with works soon to begin in Seghe.

Despite challenges posed by heavy rainfall over Christmas, construction on the Buala Market is advancing.  The concrete seawall is nearing completion, and blockwork on the market structure is well underway.

Vendors are operating from a temporary market built as part of the project.

“We’re looking forward to the completion of the market and the economic boost that will create for Buala and the people of Isabel,” High Commissioner Hilton said.

With ongoing job creation and skills development, the Buala Market is expected to contribute significantly to the local economy upon completion.
