Breaking Barriers: Stella Teikatapu's Journey from TVET to Entrepreneurship
Stella
Teikatapu, a woman from Renbel Province, is breaking down barriers and
inspiring women across the Solomon Islands through her journey in Technical and
Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
Stella graduated from Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC) in 2021 with a Certificate III in Education Support. After graduating, she established a Phoenix school utilizing the skills and knowledge she gained from training with APTC in Samoa.
She established the Phoenix school in the White River community, West Honiara. The idea arose from a passion for teaching and addressing the needs for developing children's educational journey around the White River community.
"Like many women in the country, I wanted to start something to support my family. I established the Phoenix School to support children in my community. This school is more than just a source of income; it's a platform where I can nurture young minds and share my passion for teaching.”
Stella's entrepreneurial spirit was ignited by her desire for independence and the freedom to pursue her passion.
"Being my boss allows me to follow my heart and dedicate myself to educating children," she said.
She faced numerous challenges throughout her journey. Operating on a limited budget and relying on community fundraising have tested her resilience. Her steadfast commitment keeps her moving forward.
She explained that the school's primary challenge currently is a lack of funding, which has impacted its operation. It operates on a limited budget and relies on community fundraising.
“Funding is my biggest challenge. I run the school on a small budget from operations and organize community fundraising to keep things going. Despite these challenges, we remain steadfast, driven by our commitment to shaping children and securing a brighter future for our White River community.”
For women and girls aspiring to pursue TVET education or become entrepreneurs, Stella said, "When you consider applying for study, go for it. Don't let challenges or negativity hold you back. Push yourself towards success. Don't follow the crowd—let the crowd follow you."
Stella is proud of her school and contribution to the community and country by building and nurturing the children.
She is honored to play a role in shaping the future of the Solomon Islands’ children enrolled at the school. She encourages parents and guidance around the White River community to bring their children for enrolment in 2025.
