A Rising Star: Shirley Ifunaoa's Journey to Educational Leadership
Shirley
Ifunaoa, a proud alumna of the University of the South Pacific (USP), has
defied the odds and risen to become the Deputy School Principal at the
Technical Institute of Malaita.
Her journey from humble beginnings in Mbokonavera one in Honiara, Solomon Islands, demonstrates her resilience, determination, and unwavering pursuit of excellence.
Growing up in a family of seven, Shirley faced financial hardships and limited opportunities. Yet, she harboured a strong desire for education, driven by a wish to make her family proud.
In 2017, she earned a Bachelor of Commerce in Tourism and Hospitality Management at USP’s Laucala campus in Fiji. She acknowledged the Solomon Islands Government scholarship, which supported her in achieving her dreams.
USP's curriculum, including specialized courses in tourism and hospitality, equipped Shirley with practical skills and industry insights. Internships and research projects further honed her abilities, preparing her for the challenges of the professional world.

After graduating, Shirley transitioned into a career in education. She held positions as a trainer and Head of Department for the Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality at the Technical Institute of Malaita.
Her continuous pursuit of knowledge led her to acquire additional qualifications from the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC) and USP TAFE, enhancing her expertise in training, assessment, and climate change resilience.
Betty Tanua, Shirley’s friend and a fellow USP student, praised her proactive nature, diligence, and strong teamwork skills. She said Shirley is always eager to contribute ideas and embrace new concepts, making her a valuable asset to any team.
Betty said she believes these qualities have been instrumental in Shirley's success.
“Despite the demanding academic workload, Shirley excelled at time management, balancing her studies, social life, and personal growth, and consistently dedicated time to self-improvement and supporting those around her,” Betty said.
Reflecting on her journey, Shirley emphasized the importance of a positive mindset and the ability to embrace change. She encourages current USP students to stay focused, be determined, and never let circumstances define their potential.
