Solomon Islands Celebrates World Tourism Day 2024: Embracing the Theme of 'Tourism and Peace'

The Solomon Islands proudly joined the global community in celebrating World Tourism Day 2024 under the theme, ‘Tourism and Peace.’

This year’s theme holds profound significance for the international tourism industry and the local context in the Solomon Islands, underscoring the inseparable link between peace and a thriving tourism sector.

Without peace, tourism cannot exist. As we reflect on this theme, we are reminded of the vital role peace plays in fostering a successful tourism industry and the opportunities it brings to our nation.

Globally, tourism has long served as a bridge connecting people, cultures, and nations. It promotes understanding, fosters goodwill, and helps build the foundations for lasting peace. In peaceful regions, tourism flourishes, generating jobs, strengthening economies, and enhancing cultural exchange. However, when peace is disrupted, tourism declines and the social and economic benefits are lost.

Locally, the Solomon Islands has experienced firsthand the devastating impact of instability on tourism. The ethnic crisis that gripped our nation shut down the tourism industry entirely, causing severe economic hardship and halting international arrivals. More recently, riots and civil unrest have continued to harm our image as a peaceful and welcoming destination. No tourist wishes to visit a war-torn or unsafe location. Peace and safety are non-negotiable for tourism’s growth, and our future prosperity depends on maintaining stability.

The theme ‘Tourism and Peace’ powerfully reminds us that peace is necessary for tourism to thrive. It calls on the government, communities, and stakeholders to work together to ensure a peaceful environment where tourism can grow, benefiting the economy and the nation.

Our International Visitor Survey consistently highlights the Solomon Islands' reputation for its warm hospitality and friendly people. We must continue to build on this strength, presenting a positive and peaceful image of our country. By doing so, we can proudly restore and live up to our ‘Hapi Isles’ brand again.

To mark this significant occasion, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, in collaboration with Tourism Solomons, tour operators, accommodation providers, the Solomon Islands National University School of Tourism and Hospitality, and Solomon Airlines, organized a symbolic 3.8-kilometre Peace Walk from Bloody Ridge National Peace Park to the Pagoda.

The choice of starting the walk at Bloody Ridge was particularly meaningful. Bloody Ridge is a site of deep historical significance, symbolizing peace and reconciliation. It was here that the tide of World War II in the Pacific turned, and global peace was eventually restored between former enemies. By beginning our Peace Walk at this historic site, we were reminded that peace is hard-earned and essential for the prosperity of our tourism sector and the future of our country.

As we commemorate World Tourism Day 2024, let us all reflect on the crucial role of peace in tourism and commit ourselves to creating and maintaining a peaceful Solomon Islands. Together, we can ensure a stable and secure environment where visitors feel welcome, our tourism industry thrives, and our people prosper.
