Australia’s Foreign Minister arrives in Solomon Islands

Australia’s Foreign Minister, Senator Penny Wong, will arrive in Honiara today to engage in high-level discussions with the newly elected Solomon Islands Government. This visit underscores Australia’s commitment to bolstering economic, development, and security cooperation in the Pacific region.

Minister Wong is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele, Foreign Minister Peter Shanel Agovaka, and other key government officials. The discussions aim to address the Solomon Islands Government's priorities and forge a shared vision for the future of the Solomon Islands-Australia relationship.

“The Australian Government is pleased to have supported the delivery of safe and secure elections in the Solomon Islands and remains committed to supporting Solomon Islands’ economic, development, and security priorities,” stated Minister Wong.

During her visit, Minister Wong will also visit Mbokona Community High School to observe firsthand the impact of Australian aid on education in the Solomon Islands. Additionally, she will meet with workers from the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme to learn about the economic opportunities the program is bringing to the Solomon Islands.

“Australia is a steadfast partner for the Solomon Islands. We were proud to support the successful Pacific Games in 2023, and we are building on our strong economic partnership, focused on infrastructure, jobs, and growth,” Minister Wong said.

The visit reflects Australia's ongoing commitment to the Solomon Islands, focusing on stability, prosperity, and security within the Pacific region. Minister Wong is looking forward to productive discussions with the new Solomon Islands Government to further these goals.

“I look forward to holding productive talks with the new Solomon Islands Government about how we can work together to promote stability, prosperity, and security in our shared region.”

Australia continues to support the Solomon Islands through various initiatives, including education and labor mobility; this visit marks a significant step in strengthening the ties between the two nations and promoting a stable and prosperous Pacific.
