Australian Foreign Minister meets with Solomon Islands Government

Australia’s foreign minister, Senator the Hon Penny Wong, arrived in Honiara today and met with Prime Minister Hon Jeremiah Manele and key ministers of the Government for National Unity and Transformation.

During her meeting with Prime Minister Manele, Minister Wong congratulated him on his appointment and listened to the new government’s priorities.

Emphasizing the importance of their bilateral relationship, Minister Wong stated, "Prime Minister Manele is a good friend of Australia, and our meeting today was an opportunity to discuss how we can work together to transform our partnership and assist the Solomon Islands in meeting its economic, social, and security objectives more quickly."

Minister Wong highlighted the Solomon Islands' strategic significance to Australia, noting, "The Solomon Islands is an important partner for Australia. Our two countries are close neighbors with interconnected futures.

I was pleased to personally reaffirm Australia’s commitment to the Solomon Islands as its first economic, development, infrastructure, and security partner. We welcome Prime Minister Manele’s willingness to explore much larger bilateral cooperation between our two countries."

In addition to her discussions with Prime Minister Manele, Minister Wong also met with several other prominent figures, including the Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Hon Peter Shanel, and the Minister for Finance and Treasury, Hon Manasseh Sogavare.

These meetings with the Government for National Unity and Transformation members focused on fostering long-term economic growth and stability in the Solomon Islands.

Minister Wong reiterated Australia’s dedication to supporting the Solomon Islands’ development: "We will listen and respond to Solomon Islands’ needs and priorities based on mutual trust, respect, and open dialogue."

On the second day of her visit, Minister Wong will engage with local community members to observe firsthand how Australia’s support for the education sector impacts young Solomon Islanders' lives.

She will also meet with Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) workers to discuss how the economic opportunities provided by the PALM scheme are helping them support their families and communities.

Minister Wong’s visit marks a continued commitment to strengthening the ties between Australia and the Solomon Islands, ensuring that both nations can collaboratively work towards a prosperous and secure future.
