Solomon Islands Q1 visitor numbers best since 2019

Tourism Solomons is celebrating a positive start to 2024, recording its highest first-quarter international visitor arrivals since 2019.

According to figures released by the Solomon Islands National Statistics Office (SINSO), the destination welcomed a total of 4,903 visitors in the first three months of the year. This represents a 24% increase compared to the 3,940 visitors recorded during the same period in 2023.

Australia remains the leading source market, with visitor numbers climbing slightly from 1,426 to 1,484. New Zealand also showed positive growth, with arrivals rising 39% from 236 to 329. Fiji and Papua New Guinea saw similar trends, with an 11% and 84% increase in visitors, respectively.

However, the United States was the only source market to experience a decline, with visitor arrivals dropping by 5% from 351 to 330.

Despite falling short of the record-breaking 6,042 visitors achieved in Q1 of 2019, Tourism Solomons CEO (acting) Dagnal Dereveke remains optimistic. He credits concerted marketing efforts alongside partner Solomon Airlines for the positive results.

"Our 2024 marketing strategy remains focused on rebuilding and growing visitor numbers in our key source markets," Mr. Dereveke said.

This strong start to the year suggests a promising recovery for Solomon Islands tourism. With continued marketing efforts, the destination looks to reach pre-pandemic visitor levels soon.
