YECSI Sunday Market Continues to Empower Young Entrepreneurs
On a typical Sunday at Troppo, King Solomon Hotel, the atmosphere is alive with colour, creativity, and conversation.
Stalls lined with handmade crafts, vibrant fashion pieces, and unique local products draw in a steady flow of visitors—each one discovering the talent and ambition of young entrepreneurs in Honiara.
At the heart of this growing movement is the Young Entrepreneurs Council Solomon Islands (YECSI), whose Sunday Market has quietly become more than just a marketplace.
It is a space where ideas are tested, confidence is built, and dreams begin to take shape.
Held on the first and third Sundays of each month, the market has steadily gained popularity among locals and visitors alike.
For many young business owners, it offers a rare and valuable opportunity—not just to sell, but to connect, learn, and grow.
YECSI Coordinator Moses Jrn Aunama sees the impact firsthand.
“The YECSI Sunday Market is a platform for young entrepreneurs to showcase what they have to offer,” he said. “It creates space for them to grow their businesses, connect with customers, and gain confidence in the marketplace.”
For Sonya Rechenberg, a subcommittee member and owner of Sons and Daughters, the market represents something even bigger—a vision for expansion and inclusion.
“We are hoping to open more spaces so that more young people can join, especially those who want to sell food and drinks,” she said. “Our goal is to create a bigger and more inclusive platform for all our members.”
She emphasised that the market is open to everyone, not just existing YECSI members.
“We encourage young people to come and be part of this growing business network. This platform is about creating opportunities and supporting each other to succeed,” she added.
Behind the scenes, the success of the Sunday Market is supported by a network of partners, sponsors, and dedicated members who continue to invest in its growth.
YECSI acknowledged key sponsors including Solrice, CS Vision, Cabit, and JW Laundry for their valuable contributions to the fundraising drive initiative.
They also extended their appreciation to local businesses and members such as 3M, Elanis Arts and Crafts, Regis Arts and Crafts, Twice is Nice, Sons and Daughters, and So Glamorous for their continued support.
The venue itself has played a significant role in shaping the market’s success. Troppo at King Solomon Hotel has provided not just space, but a consistent home for the initiative to thrive.
“We are grateful to Troppo for giving us the space and for supporting our vision to grow this initiative into something bigger,” Sonya said.
Adding to the lively atmosphere are the live prize draws held during each market event. Shoppers who spend $50 or more at participating stalls are given a chance to win, bringing an extra layer of excitement while encouraging support for local vendors.
But beyond the prizes and products, the Sunday Market tells a deeper story—one of resilience, creativity, and community. It is a place where young entrepreneurs are not only selling goods but building futures.
As the market continues to grow, so too does its impact—creating pathways for young people across Honiara, and soon, the wider Solomon Islands, to turn their ideas into thriving businesses.
