Bethesda Struggles Financially, But 7 Individuals with Disability Graduates

Bethesda Disability Training and Support Centre, a vital institution for individuals with disabilities in the Solomon Islands, faces significant financial challenges.

This was revealed by Thelma Awasi, the principal of Bethesda Disability Training and Support Centre, during their recent graduation, which celebrated the achievement of seven individuals with disabilities, including two females and five males.

Thelma Awasi, Principal of Bethesda Disability Training and Support Centre, addressed the school's financial challenges during its recent graduation ceremony.

These graduates received Certificates of Attainment, equipping them to enter the workforce and make meaningful contributions to the Solomon Islands.

Thelma said the school currently faces financial challenges for its operations. It relies heavily on school projects and donor support to maintain its operations.

Bethesda is struggling to sustain its mission with limited resources and minimal government funding. This year has presented numerous challenges, and we are operating with limited resources, heavily depending on the generosity of our donor partners,” Thelma said.

“Our income comes mainly from school-run initiatives, such as the poultry and training departments, with egg sales as the primary revenue source. These earnings are critical for our daily operational costs, as support from the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development remains insufficient.

Despite these financial challenges, Bethesda retains the resilience, passion, and dedication that drive its team forward.

“We remain resilient, fueled by our shared passion and the belief that our mission is a service inspired by divine guidance. We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where individuals with disabilities can realize their potential, develop valuable skills, and ultimately contribute to the economic growth of the Solomon Islands,” she said.

Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele and Madam Joycelyn Manele join the graduating students of Bethesda Disability Training and Support Centre in celebrating their achievements.

Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele, attending as the guest of honor, underscored the importance of the center’s mission in his keynote address.

He acknowledged the challenges highlighted by the school principal, and said the government will work through the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development and other donor partners.

“I heard your remarks and plea on the challenges and concerns raised for more resourcing. We’ll work closely with the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development and our partners to try our best to support Bethesda,” Prime Minister Manele said.

He congratulated the graduates on their achievements, praising their hard work, resilience, and determination.

“This moment inspires people to be their best version,” he said.

“I am truly honored to be part of this celebration. I encourage you to continue striving for yourselves. In whatever you do, no matter how small it may seem, as your Prime Minister, I am immensely proud of your achievement,” Hon. Manele added.

Bethesda Disability Training and Support Centre is a Solomon Islands facility providing vocational training and support for people with disabilities. It is operated under the South Sea Evangelical Church (SSEC) Education Authority and is dedicated to empowering individuals with disabilities and recognizing their potential to contribute meaningfully to society.
