OPINION—Tourism: A Potential Sector for Economic Recovery

The Solomon Islands must heavily invest in the tourism sector for economic recovery, as this sector can significantly boost the country’s economy, especially in light of the setbacks caused by COVID-19 and recent civil unrest.

Despite being overshadowed by its neighbours, Fiji and Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands is a hidden gem in the South Pacific, boasting pristine natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and unique attractions. The recent resurgence in the tourism industry, driven by strategic marketing initiatives and celebrity endorsements, promises substantial economic and developmental benefits for the destination.

According to a report by the World Travel and Tourism Council on Travel and Tourism Economic Impact 2023, the direct contribution of Travel and Tourism to the Solomon Islands' GDP in 2022 was SBD108.5 million (1.0% of GDP). This figure primarily reflects the economic activity generated by industries such as hotels, travel agents, airlines, and other passenger transportation services (excluding commuter services). The direct contribution of Travel and Tourism to GDP is expected to grow by 14.8% annually, reaching SBD630.9 million (4.2% of GDP) by 2033.

The total contribution of Travel and Tourism to GDP, which includes wider effects from investment, the supply chain, and induced income impacts, was SBD343.3 million in 2022 (3.2% of GDP). This is forecasted to rise by 13.6% annually, reaching SBD1,734.3 million by 2033 (11.7% of GDP).

Furthermore, the tourism sector generated 8,048 jobs directly in 2022 (23% of total employment). This includes employment in hotels, travel agents, airlines, and other passenger transportation services, as well as in the restaurant and leisure industries directly supported by tourists. By 2033, Travel & Tourism is expected to account for 14,247 jobs directly (3.0% of total employment), an increase of 5.0% annually from 2023.

The visit of the cast of Australia's popular "Adventure All Stars" program represents a major triumph for the Solomon Islands. The program's upcoming TV special, set to be broadcast in 190 countries, will showcase the Solomon Islands' diverse attractions – from cultural immersion experiences to adventurous activities – to a vast global audience.
